Things I’m loving this month: October edition

At The Body Brat, I love sharing my thoughts and ideas to make readers more confident in how they shop for their body and overall lifestyle. If you like some of my suggestions and choose to purchase through the links below, I may receive a commission. Also, keep in mind pricing and availability are subject to change.

I’ve always wanted to be a fashion, beauty and culture editor, and for the longest time (even despite having this blog), I thought I needed to be validated as one by some bigger publication. Well, bitch, I’m an editor — because I friggin said so — and these are my Octobesr favorites.

Culture:

God-Level Knowledge Darts: Life Lessons from the Bronx‘ by Desus and Mero: As someone who grew up in the BX (and still lives here), this is so authentically Bronx. It’s a genuinely fit for an October favorites roundup. Not to mention, it’s just hilarious AF. If you don’t know that the brand is strong, you will know once you read it. Get the audiobook if you dare to die of laughter. You’ve been warned.

The viral Sharpie S Gel Pen: If you don’t know, my other job is writing shopping content for In The Know. As if I needed more reasons to shop, my co worker Katie wrote about a new Sharpie pen that’s going viral on TikTok. Needless to say, I was convinced. It’s also not a stupid buy because I am, after all, an editor now. Hehe.

Fashion:

This Oversized Sherpa Jacket from Target:

I had to show you the photo because a Black dark-skinned, plus size woman is wearing it. Now for the jacket: I bought this on one of my random trips to Target and stumbled upon it. I had no idea it was a jacket (I’ve been sleeping in it the last few days) because for $30 that’s kind of a steal. Not to mention, it keeps selling out and restocking online, so it’s clearly more than just a favoite of mine.

Beauty

Accessories:

Kitcsh Ultra Soft Microfiber Leopard Spa Headband: I’m no headband connoisseur, but I’ll tell you this spa headband from Kitsch keeps the flyaways out of my face when I’m doing my skincare routine. I also may happen to use it to lay down my baby hairs, like everyday.

Clutch Nails in Greek Goddess: I love press-ons that aren’t so firm you can’t pull them off in a moment’s notice. These ones from clutch nails are just simple and easy to throw on when I want my nails done up.

Makeup

The Lip Bar Liquid Lipstick in Brick House: I know the beauty community has its grievances on liquid lipsticks. However, they’re all I know when it comes to wearing makeup under a mask. This is the lipstick and lip shade I’ve been going for all month-long. For one, it’s super matte (too matte for some) and the color looks gorgeous on deeper skin tones. Did I mention the brand is Black-owned? Yerrr!

Freck Beauty Freck OG: Lately, I’ve been doing my makeup more. This freckle pen product though has been getting way more use from me since I dyed my hair red. Besides the fact that it’s so small and I can easily lose it in seconds, it gives that doll-esque look I like to go for sometimes when I’m feeling down. More on that…later.

Skincare

Mele Even Dark Spot Control Facial Serum: I’m a skincare freak. So, when I found out Target was dropping a line dedicated to melanin, I was already sold. It makes my October favorites list because of its uniqueness. It features niacinamide and retinyl propriate to get rid of dark spots

Hair

Flawless by Gabrielle Union Hydrating Co-Wash Cleansing Hair Conditioner and Shine Enhancing Heat Protection Spray: After dying my hair, I was worried all of it might just fall right out of my head. An irrational fear, yes, but I was pleased to know that my hair felt healthy after using these two gems to co wash and safely blow dry and iron my hair.

Flower by Drew Ionic 1” Volumizing Styler: I didn’t expect to love this product as much as I do. This Voluminizing Styler is easily one of my October favorites because I didn’t need a lot of heat to achieve my look.

Food & Beverage:

Hydros Water Bottle: This was an easy addition to my October favorites. Hydros sent me a water bottle to try, and I’m kind of obsessed with it now. I drink more water now (yay hydration). Plus, I don’t have to feel as bad about creating more plastic waste. Pssst, the bottle is made from 100% coconut shell carbon.

Public Goods White Cheddar Popcorn: It’s some sort of right of passage when you finally get your Black ass New York-born and bred parents to take one of your shopping suggestions. Ever since I told my mother about the brand Public Goods, she hasn’t stopped placing massive grocery orders since.

However, in those orders is my favorite bag of white cheddar popcorn. It’s made with buttermilk, cheddar, garlic and onion. Plus, its organic, gluten-free and non-GMO.
